Jerry’s Jots: (10/2/05)
How many of us are scared to death of the possibility of sharing our faith with others? If there is one thing that we need in this society, where it is not primarily the “moral majority”, but the “silent majority”, is boldness. I’m convinced that most of us want to share our faith with our loved ones, but we have been intimidated.
Years ago there was a program on the radio called, “The Low Pressure Salesman”. He had to go out and make sales, but he was intimidated by people. He would knock on the door, and then say, “Nobody home. I hope. I hope. I hope”.
There are a lot of people like that when it comes to sharing their faith for Christ. Loyalty makes them go on one hand, but their fear makes them slow, on the other hand.
I heard of a gospel peacher who answered the door bell. When he opened the door, he saw two Jehovah’s Witnesses standing there. As they began their spill, he interrupted saying, “I already have the truth”. Thinking that this would end the conversation, he motioned to close the door. Just then one of them said, “If you already have the truth, then why haven’t you been to my door?”
It is one thing to have the truth, but it is another to share the truth. Christianity is not a religion for the timid and coward. Jesus challenges us to be brave even in the face of persecution. Just think of the bravery of those first century Christians, who even under the threat of death went about telling the story of Jesus. What made them so bold? Those folks were no different from any of us. They had no supernatural anointing of the Spirit that caused them to be so brave. As a matter of fact, many of them died for their faith before there was a completed New Testament.
You and I cannot cop out of our obligation to witness for Christ by saying, “Those people back then were special”. They were no more special than people today. It is time for us to be bold.
